15th March 2011 - Interview With Nigel Hazell, Chairman of NRH

1. What were your primary motives for establishing The Learning Institute in China?

China is making incredible strides down the path of becoming the World’s premier economic powerhouse. However, for this to happen, it is important for the business skills of its people to keep pace. The Learning Institute was set up in China to contribute to this process.

Within China, there are many many high-quality training organisations already operating - although few of them are providing quality training in soft skills for use in the workplace. We therefore concluded that we could achieve the greatest impact if we equipped such training organisations to broaden their range of offerings to include training in soft-skills. This has meant that a greater number of people have benefitted from our programmes than if we provided the training delivery alone.

2. Where do you see the major developmental and training needs amongst local Chinese Mainland staff in general?

Let’s be clear - there are many highly talented and well-trained people within China already. But there does remain a very large number of people that would benefit from more honed soft skills. Naturally, different people have different needs - but areas  that we see as requiring most help include presenting, communicating, project management, teamwork, customer service, delegation, influencing and selling, motivating of staff, networking, time management and business development.

3. How is the Learning Institute planning to meet the growing demand for soft skills training in the region?

As mentioned, we see equipping and supporting existing training organisations as the best way for us to contribute to the need. So this is our primary approach both in China and also elsewhere in Asia.

4. What are the distinguishing points that separate The Learning Institute from the vast competition out there in the market?

As mentioned, we do little direct training of our own - but instead seek to equip other training organisations with the tools to deliver soft-skills courses.

But the other major differentiator is our materials. The Learning Institute has developed what we believe to be the most effective materials for the delivery of soft-skills courses. We have sought to maximise the visual impact from our materials so as to increase their effectiveness with the course participants. And we have compiled the materials in such a way, and including specific facilitator guidance, such that individuals not experienced in delivering such courses can do so readily and to a high standard.

5. What are your future plans for The Learning Institute?

We are now starting to roll out soft skills courses in the form of iPhone apps, using our proven materials and methods. And we continue to look for ways whereby we can help more people to improve themself.

ICFE (International Certificate of Financial English) is a programme run jointly between  Cambridge ESOL and the ACCA - of which The Learning Institute are a globally approved training and content provider.

Interview with: David Ran

David Ran worked for the finance team in the Beijing office of international marketing communications company Ogilvy & Mather (O&M) when he studied for – and passed – the ICFE qualification. ’My employer wanted me, and my colleagues, to improve our English language skills, especially in a professional context, and so arranged for us to attend a tuition course for ICFE,’ explains David. Tuition was delivered in-house by specialist local learning provider The Learning Institute: ’We took about 20 classes, and were taught by an English teacher - Kiran Patel - which really helped us a lot,’ he adds.

Patel, who is regional manager – North China of The Learning Institute, points out that this combination of focused financial English language teaching delivered by native speakers proved particularly effective: ’O&M were enticed by the overall quality of the qualification, and by our enthusiasm for the course and our native speaking teaching resource,’ he says. In addition, formal skills certification is an important benefit in the highly competitive Chinese employment market, and the ability to offer staff a qualification accredited by both ACCA and Cambridge ESOL was seen as a further benefit.

Up to 16 O&M employees attended each class, which developed students’ ability to use English confidently and accurately in a financial environment, focusing on the core skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. The class used study materials published by BPP Learning Media together with supporting resources developed by Patel and his team. ’I found help with writing English the most useful section of the course,’ says David; classes prepared students for the final exam, but also incorporated simulations of real life situations in order to provide plenty of opportunity for students to practise their skills.

David passed his exam in January 2010 and is now making the most of his new qualification: ’I have found that the course has been useful in helping me perform day to day tasks, such as writing emails, but I also hope the Certificate will improve my longer term career prospects as it is proof of specific professional skills.’

23rd March 2010 - ACCA Job Hunting Competition 2010 is launched

This spring marks the start of the ACCA Job Hunting Competition 2010 (JHC). This competition, through mock interviews, is expected to help university students to learn more on the skills of job interviews and hopefully after this, can help students to land on the ideal jobs they want in the future.  The preliminary round will be held individually in five regions: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Hong Kong, from this Feb to May. Afterwards, the top three from each region will enter the final, held in Beijing.

This year, as a record, ACCA has formed nation-wide partnerships with 12 enterprises, including the Big 4 accounting firms, and 60 other enterprises and organizations as local partners. With greater involvement and influence, we hope more students and ACCA-recognized employers can benefit from it. The competition will offer 2,100 entries for logic testing, 780 entries for the BULATS English test and over 140 internship opportunities in big corporations from China or aboard. With fostering the finance and accounting elites in mind, ACCA is keen on promoting continuous improvement among enterprises and participating charity events.  Through the JHC, we hope college students can enhance their employability while at the same time, fortifying communication with employers, as well as a better understanding of their personal and employer needs, so as to be fully equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills before entering their professional field.

This competition has been held continuously, 6 times from 2004 to 2009. Last year, the event received 5,462 applicants from over 180 colleges. Through a series of written tests, on-campus interviews, employability training camps and interactive activities with renowned enterprises, participants gained advice on career planning and had advanced their employability. In 2009, over 140 students were selected to the internship program where they could get invaluable experience. To this day, ACCA JHC is getting more and more recognition among teachers and employers.
